Warning from Former JMS Vice President: "Be Suspicious of Excessive Kindness"

Pastor Kim Kyung-chun Leaving After 30 Years of Ministry
"Social and Ethical Standards Completely Collapsed Inside"
"Congregants Don't Watch TV or Use Internet... Very Frustrating"

After the release of the Netflix documentary "I Am God: The People Betrayed by God," which deals with the issue of cults, public outrage over the misdeeds of Jeong Myeong-seok, the president of the Christian Gospel Mission (JMS), has not subsided.

On the 10th, Pastor Kim Gyeong-cheon, who was active in JMS for 30 years since 1980 and even served as vice president, appeared on CBS Radio's "Park Jae-hong's One-on-One Match" to reveal the true nature of Jeong Myeong-seok. Pastor Kim escaped from JMS in December 2009 and created a JMS victims' community cafe. He reminded listeners that JMS followers show extreme kindness to recruit people and urged, "Be suspicious of kindness."

"Even when I was there... I couldn't think Jeong Myeong-seok was bad," he confessed

Regarding Jeong Myeong-seok's sexual exploitation that began in 1978, Pastor Kim said, "Looking back now, I can't understand it, but when I was there, even though I was aware of it, I didn't think it was that bad," adding, "JMS is a different world."

About his silence despite knowing about the sexual exploitation at the time, he explained, "When you are inside, social and ethical standards collapse. Since Jeong Myeong-seok spoke by comparing himself to the authority of the Bible, his words were thought to be God's words."

Regarding those who still follow JMS, he expressed frustration, saying, "To put it negatively, they are gullible people. To put it positively, they are kind, but to put it negatively, somewhat naive. Fundamentally, people are good, but when the system is challenged, they become strong," and added, "They neither see nor hear. They don't watch TV or use the internet... they don't see anything that challenges them."

"After arrest, he couldn't get acquitted, then doctrine was revised... that was the enlightenment"

So how was Pastor Kim enlightened? "In 2007, Jeong Myeong-seok was arrested in Beijing, China, and the prosecutor asked, 'Are you the Messiah?' He said, 'No.' I was shocked, but I thought it was a _mosa_ (a lie for the glory of God) and let it go. However, despite the _mosa_, Jeong Myeong-seok was not acquitted, and the doctrine was revised," he said. "Jeong Myeong-seok told us to return to Christianity. There was no need to stay here, so I went to a regular church. While listening to the sermon, tears streamed down my face, and I began to see that white is white and black is black."

Nevertheless, leaving was not easy. Pastor Kim said, "For six months, I prayed more, wandered, and even had thoughts of suicide. Because I had devoted my life and left my parents and relatives behind, coming here thinking I was the only one who was right, it was very hard to deny that. I also worried, 'What if Jeong Myeong-seok is really the Messiah? Am I Judas Iscariot?'"

Finally, Pastor Kim Gyeong-cheon urged caution about JMS, saying, "Be suspicious of excessive kindness."
