Busan Port Authority (BPA) will officially operate the Ungdong Hinterland Cargo Truck Rest Area, currently under construction to alleviate parking difficulties at Busan New Port, starting from the end of May.
In January 2021, BPA signed an agreement with SK Energy to develop the Ungdong Hinterland Cargo Truck Rest Area project to resolve parking issues caused by the increase in cargo volume and cargo trucks at the New Port.
Since its opening, Busan Port New Port has seen a continuous increase in cargo volume, leading to a rise in cargo trucks transporting goods. However, due to a shortage of parking spaces, illegal parking within the port hinterland has become a serious problem.
The Ungdong Hinterland Cargo Truck Rest Area project, which began construction in April 2022, is currently 80% complete and is scheduled to be completed in April this year, with full operation starting at the end of May.
In addition to 790 parking spaces, the rest area will be equipped with convenience facilities such as maintenance buildings, fueling stations, and rest buildings, contributing to the welfare of cargo truck drivers.
Hong Seong-jun, Head of BPA Operations Headquarters, stated, “The Ungdong Hinterland Cargo Truck Rest Area can accommodate about twice as many vehicles compared to the existing cargo truck rest areas in the Bukcon and Namcon hinterland logistics sites, which will help reduce illegal parking around the New Port area and contribute to decreasing traffic congestion and accidents.”
BPA plans to additionally construct cargo truck rest areas in the Seocon and Namcon hinterland logistics complexes, which are opening sequentially, to meet the growing demand for cargo truck rest areas and parking lots due to the increase in cargo volume at the New Port.
