Honoring Sacrifice and Dedication...
To commemorate the 8th West Sea Defense Day, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has renovated the Seoul Dream Billboard and unveiled it to the public on the 10th.
Every year, the fourth Friday of March (this year, March 24) is West Sea Defense Day. On June 29, 2002, the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, on March 26, 2010, the Cheonan ship sinking incident, and on November 23, 2010, the Yeonpyeong Island shelling resulted in the sacrifice of a total of 55 of our soldiers. To honor and commemorate their sacrifice and dedication, this day was established as a legal memorial day in 2016.
This year marks the 8th anniversary of West Sea Defense Day. At the Seoul Library Dream Billboard, a banner featuring a photo of the beautiful sunset scenery of the West Sea is displayed with the copy, “Because of the West Sea they protected, we have the beautiful sea we see today.” This conveys the meaning that the beautiful scenery and daily life we are experiencing now might not be visible if it were not for the 55 warriors who sacrificed their lives defending the West Sea. It was created with the intention of recognizing that the peace in our daily lives is thanks to these national heroes, and to express gratitude and remembrance for them.
Choi Won-seok, Director of Public Relations Planning at Seoul City, said, “March is also the month of West Sea Defense Day,” and added, “We hope many citizens take an interest in West Sea Defense Day, understand that behind the peaceful daily life we enjoy lies the sacrifice of countless national heroes, and take this opportunity to remember and honor the 55 warriors who became stars of the West Sea.”
