The Women’s Leadership group of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, ‘Women In koRea 2.0’ (WIR “Wieo”/German: 우리), announced that on the 8th, it held an event commemorating ‘International Women’s Day 2023’ at the German Ambassador’s Residence in Korea, together with the German Embassy in Korea.
This event was the first in-person gathering since COVID-19, attended by about 90 female executives and employees from various fields including mentors and mentees of the WIR group, the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kyobo Life Insurance, Deutsche Bank Seoul Branch, Korea International Finance Institute, CJ CheilJedang, Yulchon LLC, Bayer Korea, and Conferry.
Under the theme “Sowing, Nurturing, Growing,” the event featured knit doll artist Seo Yoon-nam (age 91), who presented works symbolizing women’s solidarity. In particular, the artist, who is over ninety years old, shared her journey and life wisdom, attracting great interest from the participants.
Michael Reiffenstuhl, German Ambassador to Korea, stated, “The fight for women’s rights and gender equality is a fight for the most fundamental human rights and a battle against social prejudice, economic inequality, and invisible discrimination. It is time to seize every opportunity to accelerate progress toward gender equality and fairness not only in Germany and Korea but worldwide. In this regard, last week Germany announced a new ‘Feminist Foreign Policy’ that guarantees equal representation and access to resources for everyone.” He added, “I am confident that the WIR program will provide great opportunities for women leading change in Korea.”
Geumju Heo, Co-Representative of WIR Mentorship and Senior Specialist in International Cooperation at Kyobo Life Insurance, said, “I am pleased that we can resume in-person programs supporting gender equality and women entrepreneurs at a time when the proportion of female executives on boards of Korea’s top 500 listed companies has reached 10%. This year, various beneficial and diverse events aligned with WIR’s strategy are planned, and through these, I hope we can create a better future together for women both domestically and internationally.”
Susanne Boehrle, Vice President of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, “Raising awareness of women’s rights and their voices worldwide is very important. Through WIR 2.0, we will support Korean female talents to lead the future.”
Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry WIR Group and Mentorship Program
The WIR Group of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry is a network of female executives across industries and countries, focusing on Gender, Generations, and Geographics. It aims to discover the leadership potential of mid-level female managers in Korea and foster value-driven leadership.
The ‘Women In koRea 2.0’ (WIR “Wieo”/German: 우리) group consists of passionate top executives who want to help emerging female leaders fully realize their potential and pave new paths in the workplace. This program was launched based on the belief that mentorship involves mutual exchange and benefits regardless of professional background or rank. The WIR group aims to collaborate on the critical challenges women face in dynamic business environments and resolve them through the mentorship program.
