At a trial held on the 8th under the presiding of Judge Jeon Beom-sik of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 8, the prosecution requested a 10-month prison sentence for acquaintance A (49) and an 8-month prison sentence for B (60), both charged with aiding a fugitive. They also sought a fine of 5 million won for C (37), a junior colleague of A.

The prosecution stated, "The defendants systematically and deliberately helped Kim Bong-hyun evade arrest, making it difficult for investigative authorities to capture him, which recognizes the seriousness of the crime." However, they added, "We took into account that the defendants fully confessed during the investigation and significantly contributed to the capture of Kim Bong-hyun."

The defendants admitted their wrongdoing and pleaded for leniency from the court. A said, "I deeply regret my mistakes and will strive to ensure such incidents do not happen again." B also expressed remorse, saying, "I apologize for causing trouble and am reflecting on my actions."

The prosecution indicted them without detention on January 18 for assisting Kim Bong-hyun, who fled on November 11 last year just before the sentencing hearing while on trial for embezzlement related to Star Mobility and Suwon Passenger Transport.

A few days before his escape, Kim discussed detailed plans with A and B, promising operations of private Toto and casinos. A is accused of asking B to assist Kim the day before his escape. B is charged with cutting off Kim’s electronic ankle bracelet near Paldang Bridge on the day of the escape, picking him up, and helping him switch vehicles.

C is accused of hiding Kim at his home upon A’s request, then following A’s instructions to hide Kim in an apartment in Dongtan New Town, Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, which was short-term leased under C’s name, providing him with a mobile phone and daily necessities.

The first trial verdict is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the 5th of next month.
