Personal Information Protection Commission Sanctions 12 Public Institutions for Violations of Personal Information Protection Laws

Personal Information Protection Commission Sanctions 12 Public Institutions for Violations of Personal Information Protection Laws

On the 8th, the Personal Information Protection Commission decided to impose fines totaling 39 million KRW on 12 public institutions, including Korea Expressway Corporation Service.

This investigation was conducted from October to December last year on 20 public institutions, including 15 institutions that received inadequate ratings in the public sector personal information management level diagnosis and 5 institutions reported in the media for suspected personal information leaks and misuse cases.

Focusing on the management of access rights, access logs, and account management of personal information processing systems, which are the root causes of personal information misuse, it was confirmed that 12 institutions failed to fulfill their safety obligations.

Park Young-su, the head of the investigation division, stated, “Safety obligations such as access rights management, access control, and access log inspection are the most fundamental aspects of personal information protection,” and added, “Since public institutions often collect and use personal information according to laws and regulations, it is necessary to comply more thoroughly with personal information protection laws to protect citizens' personal information.”

The Personal Information Protection Commission plans to continue efforts to fundamentally improve the management status of personal information in the public sector in accordance with the government-wide 'Public Sector Personal Information Leakage Prevention Measures' established in July last year.
