According to the county on the 8th, local tax refunds mainly occur with automobile tax and local income tax. Automobile tax refunds happen when ownership is transferred or a vehicle is scrapped after paying the annual tax, while local income tax refunds mainly occur when the national income tax adjustment amount is revised.

To organize the refunds, the county sent notification letters to eligible recipients last month and is guiding taxpayers to apply for refunds through various methods such as phone calls.

Refund applications can be easily made through the local tax refund inquiry and refund service on the Wetax system following the notification sent by the county, or by calling the Muan-gun Tax Accounting Division.

However, if there are outstanding local tax arrears, the refund will be offset against the arrears first, and if the arrears exceed the refund amount, the refund will be fully applied to the arrears without any payment.

Ham Kyung-hoon, head of the Tax Accounting Division, said, “Local tax refunds expire if not claimed within five years, so applications must be made within the deadline,” adding, “We will actively work to protect taxpayers' rights.”
