Korea Western Power has successfully ignited a power generation gas turbine for the first time in the country. Upon completion of the demonstration operation, Korea will become the fifth country in the world to secure power generation gas turbine technology.
Western Power announced on the 8th that it ignited the Korean-type gas turbine installed at the Gimpo Combined Heat and Power Plant for the first time on the 4th.
The 270 MW-class Korean-type gas turbine, independently developed by Doosan Enerbility, underwent precise construction and various tests after being installed at the Gimpo Combined Heat and Power Plant, which Western Power has been building, since April last year.
The first ignition of the Korean-type gas turbine is significant in that it confirmed the safety of a gas turbine made purely with domestic technology and established a demonstration foundation for Korean-type combined cycle power generation.
After the first ignition, Western Power plans to enter commercial operation in July following comprehensive test runs and conduct demonstration operations until 2025. If the demonstration operation is successfully completed, Korea will become the fifth country in the world, following the United States, Japan, Germany, and Italy, to possess large-scale power generation gas turbine design, manufacturing, and operation technology.
A Western Power official said, "We will succeed in the localization of gas turbines through smooth demonstration operations and fulfill our responsibility for national power supply and regional community heat supply through stable power plant operation."
