Last year, the city was selected for the Cultural Heritage Administration’s ‘2023 Transmission Education Center Revitalization Project’ competition. It plans to conduct four diverse programs including intangible cultural heritage performances, experiences, and skill transmission education at four locations: the existing Busan and Suyeong Folk Art Centers, the Busan Traditional Arts Center, and the newly added Gudeok Folk Art Center this year.
First, at the Busan Traditional Arts Center, from March 15 to November 16, a program called the intangible cultural heritage ‘Honmaek Itgi’ education program will be operated, where masters of intangible cultural heritage crafts directly pass on excellent traditional Korean crafts.
To preserve and transmit intangible cultural heritage in the craft field, nine masters including embroidery artists, pottery artists, Hwahae artists, and Buddhist painting artists will participate directly, allowing citizens of various age groups to easily experience traditional crafts.
In particular, the Busan Traditional Arts Center received high evaluations in its operations and was selected as an excellent institution in the 2022 Transmission Education Center Revitalization Project, receiving the Cultural Heritage Administration Commissioner’s Award.
The ‘Honmaek Itgi’ education program is free of charge, and applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the arts center’s website. For experience classes, group lessons and external visit education are available. For detailed information about the education, please contact the Busan Traditional Arts Center Secretariat.
At the Busan Folk Art Center, from April to November, the ‘On-go-ji-shin Season 2 - Learning the Old to Discover the New’ program for learning intangible cultural heritage will be operated.
The complex education program ‘On-go-ji-shin Season 2’ offers classes in various categories including the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Dongnae Yaryu, Dongnae Hakchum, and Dongnae Jisinbalgi. Through learning and performing intangible cultural heritage, participants can gain a deeper understanding of our cultural heritage.
The ‘On-go-ji-shin Season 2’ program is also free of charge, and applications for up to 20 participants per category are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until March. For application and detailed information, please contact the Busan Folk Art Center Secretariat.
At the Suyeong Folk Art Center, from April to October, the ‘Rakrakrak Traditional Folk Experience Class’ for elementary school students will be operated. In the ‘Rakrakrak Traditional Folk Experience Class,’ students can watch excellent intangible cultural heritage performances such as the traditional mask play Suyeong Yaryu and the traditional fishing game Jwasuyeong Eobangnori, followed by various special traditional folk experience activities.
Elementary schools wishing to participate can inquire and apply through the Suyeong Folk Art Center Secretariat, and for other detailed information, please refer to the Suyeong Folk Art Center website.
At the Gudeok Folk Art Center, which was selected for this year’s project, the ‘Our Village Cultural Heritage Awareness’ program will be operated from April to June for third-grade elementary school students in Seo-gu. This program includes group experience education by intangible cultural heritage groups and viewing performances and exhibitions aligned with the curriculum.
Kim Ki-hwan, Director of the City’s Culture and Sports Bureau, said, “We hope that experiencing Busan’s intangible heritage will be an opportunity to newly discover the unique value and meaning of intangible cultural heritage, and that the transmission education centers will become cultural hub spaces connected with the local community.” He added, “We ask for the active participation and interest of citizens in the traditional culture programs.”
