Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, at the Opening Ceremony of ‘Mapo School’: “In the Era of 100-Year Lifespans, Learning Has No End”



Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, attended the opening ceremony of ‘Mapo School’ held at the Mapo Lifelong Learning Center on the morning of the 6th.


At the event, Mayor Park, Honorary Principal (Lee Seon-jae), and about 80 students and instructors of Mapo School celebrated the opening together, exchanged greetings, and took commemorative photos.


‘Mapo School’ is a literacy education program that teaches Hangul to adults who cannot read. It was operated under the name of Basic Elementary Education until last year and was renamed ‘Mapo School’ starting this year.


At the opening ceremony, Mayor Park Gang-su said, “Mapo School students have learned life wisdom and experience before knowledge,” and encouraged, “In the era of 100-year lifespans, learning has no end. I sincerely support the students’ challenge and courage to keep learning without giving up.”

Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo District, Signs MOU with Police Station and Education Support Office to Create Safe Routes to School

Mayor Kim: “We Will Create Safe Routes to and from School That Parents Can Trust”



Seoul’s Gangseo District (Mayor Kim Tae-woo), which operates the nation’s first ‘Civil Servant Children’s Safe School Commute Task Force,’ signed a business agreement on the 6th with Gangseo Police Station and Gangseo Yangcheon Education Support Office to create safe routes to and from school.


Mayor Kim Tae-woo of Gangseo District, Lee Won-sil, Superintendent of Gangseo Yangcheon Education Support Office, and Kim Won-tae, Chief of Gangseo Police Station, agreed to cooperate by utilizing the capabilities and resources of each institution at the MOU signing ceremony held at the district office at 10 a.m. that day.


The agreement includes ▲traffic safety guidance on school routes in front of elementary schools ▲crackdown on traffic violations around elementary schools ▲education and campaigns on traffic safety rules ▲improvements to school route facilities.


Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “We will continue efforts to create safe routes to and from school in cooperation with related organizations,” adding, “We will do our best to make ‘Gangseo a great place to raise children’ where parents can send their children to school with peace of mind.”


Meanwhile, to create safe routes to and from school, the district operates the nation’s first Safe School Commute Task Force composed of district office civil servants. Mayor Kim personally proposed the idea after inspecting school routes in the area, and the task force was formed through voluntary participation of employees.


The task force operates at all 35 elementary schools in the area at least twice a week on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., ▲escorting students to ensure their safe commute within the activity sections ▲reporting walking environment hazards including damaged sidewalks and malfunctioning traffic lights, contributing to the creation of safe routes to and from school.
