7 New Lifelong Learning Cities Selected Including Goseong in Gyeongnam, Gurye in Jeonnam, and Boeun in Chungbuk

Ministry of Education Announces Results of Lifelong Learning City Selection Evaluation

The Ministry of Education and the National Institute for Lifelong Education announced on the 6th the results of the selection evaluation for the ‘2023 Regional Lifelong Education Activation Support Project,’ selecting △7 new lifelong learning cities, △17 local governments operating region-specific programs, and △4 metropolitan local governments operating lifelong learning city-metropolitan/provincial lifelong education institute linked programs.

In particular, this year, 7 basic local governments including Yangyang-gun in Gangwon-do, Goseong-gun in Gyeongnam, Bonghwa-gun in Gyeongbuk, Gurye-gun in Jeonnam, Gyeryong-si in Chungnam, Cheongyang-gun in Chungnam, and Boeun-gun in Chungbuk were newly selected as lifelong learning cities and will each receive approximately 90 million KRW in project operation funds.

Additionally, operating funds will be provided for the existing lifelong learning city specialization support projects, ‘Region-Specific Programs’ and ‘Lifelong Learning City-Metropolitan/Provincial Lifelong Education Institute Linked Programs.’

The Region-Specific Program is a project that operates lifelong learning programs reflecting regional characteristics by utilizing lifelong learning spaces in eup, myeon, and dong areas. Seventeen basic local governments were selected to support various lifelong education projects (approximately 30 million KRW each).

The Lifelong Learning City-Metropolitan/Provincial Lifelong Education Institute Linked Program utilizes lifelong learning resources at the metropolitan level. Four metropolitan local governments (Gangwon-do, Busan, Sejong, Chungbuk) were selected to receive approximately 60 million KRW each, and plans are in place to discover excellent cases of linkage and cooperation between basic and metropolitan local governments in the lifelong education field.

Lee Ju-ho, Deputy Prime Minister for Social Affairs and Minister of Education, stated, “It is important to establish a regional lifelong learning system where local governments, universities, and companies can jointly focus on promoting lifelong learning to activate lifelong learning among local residents.” He added, “This year, the Ministry of Education will also actively communicate and cooperate with regional stakeholders so that lifelong education can serve as a stepping stone to inject dynamism into the regional ecosystem.”
