The 5th generation ClearRT introduced by Korea University Anam Hospital is described by the hospital as the most advanced radiation therapy equipment in the world, uniquely equipped with automatic artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This is the first installation in Korea and the seventh in Asia. Using this equipment, a patient with head and neck cancer received the first treatment on the 7th of last month.
The 5th generation ClearRT uses images captured by Fan-beam CT rather than Cone Beam CT (CBCT), which is used in conventional radiation therapy devices. Fan-beam CT acquires high-resolution images at low doses in a shorter time. Compared to CBCT, it provides anatomically accurate images with minimal distortion, delivering clear and uniform imaging.
The image acquisition time has also become about four times faster than before, reducing the total treatment time required. With shorter treatment times, patient movement during treatment is reduced, allowing concentrated radiation exposure to cancer tissues and minimizing radiation delivery errors, thereby reducing radiation exposure to normal tissues. The scan length is also more than three times longer than that of typical radiation therapy devices, allowing for a longer treatment area. Additionally, it is the only device in the world equipped with automatic AI technology, enabling patient data management, treatment planning, and real-time delivery through the radiation cancer therapy device.
Namkwon Lee, Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Korea University Anam Hospital, emphasized, "The 5th generation ClearRT is a radiation cancer therapy device that can establish an optimal treatment plan tailored to each individual patient," adding, "It allows for more accurate and precise treatment by achieving the best therapeutic effect with the minimum dose."
Seungbeom Han, Acting Director of Korea University Anam Hospital, said, "We hope many patients regain their health through the newly introduced radiation cancer therapy device," and added, "Korea University Anam Hospital will provide the best medical care to patients with severe conditions."
