The government will meet with representatives from domestic semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to devise countermeasures against the U.S. Chips and Science Act (CSA).
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 5th, Ahn Deok-geun, the ministry's head of trade negotiations, is scheduled to meet with key semiconductor company representatives including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix on the 7th. The plan is to listen to industry opinions regarding the U.S. semiconductor support law and prepare countermeasures.
On the 28th of last month (local time), the U.S. government announced guidelines for applying for semiconductor production subsidies under the semiconductor support law, setting six evaluation criteria: economic and national security, business commercial viability, financial soundness, technological readiness, workforce development, and social contribution. Concerns have arisen that important technology and management information could be exposed during this process.
Details of the so-called "guardrail" provisions, which restrict companies receiving subsidies from investing in semiconductor facilities in China for 10 years, are also expected to be announced soon, increasing tension within the semiconductor industry.
On the 1st, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, "We will consult with relevant U.S. authorities to ensure that the positions of our companies are sufficiently reflected in the guardrail provisions of the semiconductor support law."
