Hundreds of Dog Carcasses Found at Home of Man in His 60s... Police Investigation Underway

Hundreds of Animal Corpses Found in a House in Yongmun-myeon, Yangpyeong-gun
Apparently Brought by a Breeder and Starved to Death for Money

Yangpyeong Police Station in Gyeonggi Province is investigating a man in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, without detention on charges of violating the Animal Protection Act, according to a report by Yonhap News on the 5th. According to Mr. A's statements and other information, he brought abandoned dogs and others into his home 2 to 3 years ago but did not feed them, causing the dogs to starve to death.

The animal protection organization that reported Mr. A wrote on social media, "Approximately 300 to 400 animals were found in a skeletal state at Mr. A's house. Corpses were piled up deep inside rubber barrels scattered around the yard," adding, "Corpses and skull bones were scattered throughout the rooms. The corpses were decayed and stuck to the floor, and new dogs were placed on top of the floor formed by the corpses," describing the horrific scene. They also wrote, "This place was hell where the animals had to eat their dead companions to survive."

The animal protection group claimed, "Mr. A took dogs that had lost their breeding ability or small dogs from slaughterhouses and breeding farms for 10,000 won each, then abandoned and starved them to death." Several phone numbers of breeders were found on the man's mobile phone. It appears that breeders entrusted dogs that had lost their breeding ability to this man for disposal. A police official stated, "There are so many corpses that we have not yet determined the exact scale," and added, "We are investigating the details of the case."

Article 8, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 3 of the Animal Protection Act defines abuse as "an act that intentionally causes an animal's death by not providing feed or water." Causing an animal's death through abuse is punishable by imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 30 million won.
