Prosecution Seeks 10-Year Prison Sentence for Kim Geun-sik Re-Arrested on Charges of Child Molestation

The prosecution requested a 10-year prison sentence and sex drive drug treatment for Kim Geun-sik, who was re-arrested on charges of forcibly molesting a child under the age of 13 sixteen years ago.

On the 3rd, at a trial held by the Criminal Division 1 of the Suwon District Court Anyang Branch, the prosecution requested a 10-year prison sentence for Kim Geun-sik, who was indicted for violating the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes and Protection of Victims (rape of a minor under 13) and other charges. They also asked the court to order 10 years of sex drive drug treatment (chemical castration), 10 years of wearing an electronic location tracking device (electronic anklet), and completion of a sexual violence program.

The prosecution explained the reason, saying, "Strict punishment and social isolation are necessary for the defendant who committed an inhumane crime to satisfy sexual desire."

The sentencing trial will be held at 10 a.m. on the 31st.

The defense attorney and Kim Geun-sik claimed that when he was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting 11 minors in the metropolitan area from May to September 2006, he had already confessed to crimes involving children under 13, but the prosecution belatedly filed separate charges. The defense argued, "It should be considered that if he had been tried together with the previous case, the sentence would have been lighter, and that he is receiving public criticism because of the belated indictment."

Kim Geun-sik read a letter he had prepared in advance after being given the opportunity to make a statement. He said, "I sincerely apologize to the victims and their families," and "I vow not to reoffend." However, he criticized the prosecution and the media, saying, "The prosecution belatedly indicted me on confessions I made when I surrendered long ago and played it up in the media," and "The media wrote false information that is different from the truth."

The prosecution requested a 2-year prison sentence for Kim Geun-sik on charges of assaulting prison officers at Haenam Prison in Jeollanam-do in December 2019 and July 2021 (obstruction of official duties), and for repeatedly assaulting fellow inmates from 2017 to 2019 (habitual assault).

Kim Geun-sik is accused of forcibly molesting a child under the age of 13, victim A, by hitting and threatening her with a weapon near an elementary school in Gyeonggi Province on September 18, 2006. The fact that Kim Geun-sik was the perpetrator of this case was revealed during a comprehensive investigation of unsolved sex crime cases stored at seven police stations in the Gyeonggi and Incheon areas, conducted as Kim Geun-sik’s release approached.

The prosecution received a report from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office confirming that the DNA of the unidentified perpetrator in the 2006 unsolved child molestation case matched Kim Geun-sik’s DNA, and indicted him.

Previously, Kim Geun-sik was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting 11 minors in the metropolitan area from May to September 2006, and was scheduled to be released on October 17. However, he was re-arrested one day before his full release due to newly revealed charges of forcibly molesting a child in the Incheon area 16 years ago.
