Minister Shoigu Encourages Soldiers by Awarding Medals
"It Is Rare for Leadership to Visit the Frontline in Person"
Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu visited the southern region of Donetsk, an area occupied by Russian forces in Ukraine, on the 4th (local time) and toured a military command post, according to reports by DPA and others citing the Russian Ministry of Defense.
On the same day, Minister Shoigu received a situation report at the forward command post of the Russian military unit in southern Donetsk and encouraged the soldiers by awarding them medals.
Shoigu told the soldiers, "You are fighting properly and deserve to be rewarded," adding, "Many challenges lie ahead."

The Russian Ministry of Defense also released footage showing Minister Shoigu touring a nearby ruined village with the unit commander. Southern Donetsk, part of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, along with the entire Luhansk province, is currently occupied by Russian forces.
The Russian military is concentrating its attacks around Bakhmut, a strategic point, to expand its occupied territory into northern Donetsk. Foreign media noted that it is rare for the Russian leadership to personally visit the fiercely contested frontline areas since the conflict began in February last year.
