Figure skating women's singles hopeful Shin Jiah (15, Yeongdong Middle School) won the silver medal for the second consecutive time at the Junior World Championships.
On the 4th (Korean time), Shin Jiah scored 70.27 points in technical elements score (TES), 61.44 points in program components score (PCS), and received a 1-point deduction, totaling 130.71 points in the women's singles free skating at the 2023 International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Championships held at WinSport in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Having scored 71.19 points in the short program on the 2nd, Shin Jiah finished second with a total score of 201.90 points, behind Japan's Shimada Mao (224.54 points).
Shin Jiah won the silver medal at last year's Junior World Championships. She received great expectations as the first medalist in 16 years since Kim Yuna. She was also considered a favorite to win this tournament. However, she was outperformed by Samada, who was armed with high-difficulty skills.
Starting her performance to the free skating program "Tree of Life Suite," Shin Jiah successfully landed a double Axel, triple loop, and triple Salchow cleanly in the early part. Although she received an attention (edge usage warning) on the triple flip-double toe loop-double loop combination, she remained steady by executing the flying camel spin at the highest difficulty level 4.
She continued her stable performance in the latter half, which carries a 10% bonus. She perfectly executed the triple Lutz-triple toe loop combination jump and cleanly performed the triple flip-double Axel sequence jump. Her final jump was a triple Lutz.
However, after performing the change foot combination spin (level 4), she fell while turning during the choreographic sequence as her foot slipped, resulting in a 1-point deduction. Shin Jiah finished her performance with a flying change foot combination spin (level 4).
Kim Yujae (Pyeongchon Middle School), who also participated, ranked 4th with 193.62 points, and Kwon Minsol (Mokdong Middle School) took 5th place with 191.06 points.
