Maintenance of 36 Lowland Flood Prevention Rainwater Pump Stations and Pump Facilities
Drainage Capacity Increased: 146.7 Billion KRW Invested by 2028 for New and Expanded Pump Stations
Pohang City is focusing on flood prevention in preparation for natural disasters such as heavy rain and typhoons through the installation and maintenance of rainwater pumping stations.
To prevent flooding damage in low-lying areas caused by heavy summer rains and typhoons, the city plans to conduct pre-inspections and maintenance from March to May on a total of 36 facilities, including 14 locations such as the Hyeongsan Rainwater Pumping Station and 20 locations such as the Jangseong Simple Pump.
In addition, a total budget of 1.2 billion KRW will be invested to replace and maintain 8 pumps at 8 rainwater pumping stations in April, focusing on ensuring immediate operation during heavy rain and typhoon events.
Furthermore, to prepare for large typhoons and abnormal weather accompanied by record-breaking heavy rain, the city plans to actively promote new and expanded rainwater pumping station projects to enhance drainage capacity.

Two new rainwater pumping stations will be established near the administrative welfare center in Daesong-myeon, Nam-gu, a frequent flooding area, and in the Guryongpo-eup area. Existing rainwater pumping stations in Changpo-dong, Daesong-myeon, Songdo-dong, Yeonil-eup, and the steel industrial complex will be expanded to increase the drainage capacity of the pumping stations from a 20-30 year frequency to a 50-year frequency.
To this end, the city secured 88 billion KRW in national funds after being designated as four priority sewer maintenance management areas by the Ministry of Environment in November last year. A total budget of 146.7 billion KRW, including 58.7 billion KRW from the city, will be invested by 2028. This year, the city is conducting a study to establish maintenance measures for the priority sewer maintenance management areas.
A Pohang City official said, “We will minimize damage caused by heavy rain and typhoons through facility inspections and new and expanded projects for rainwater pumping stations,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to protect the lives and property of citizens safely through ongoing inspections and maintenance.”
