The government has decided to provide humanitarian aid worth $18.5 million (approximately 24.1 billion KRW) this year to alleviate food shortages and support vulnerable groups in Yemen, which is in the midst of a civil war.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 3rd, the government announced this Yemen support plan at the "High-Level Pledging Event for the Yemen Humanitarian Crisis" held in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 27th of last month. This meeting has been held annually since 2017 and is co-hosted by Switzerland, Sweden, and the United Nations.
The Yemen civil war began in 2014 and continues to this day. Although the ceasefire agreement between the Yemeni government forces and the Houthi rebels last year eased the situation for six months, the failure to extend the ceasefire has escalated the crisis again. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that 21.6 million people, or 60% of Yemen's total population, require humanitarian assistance this year.
