"Korean Man Eating Ice Cream at Self-Service Corner"... 'National Embarrassment' in Taiwan

A video showing a Korean man at an ice cream counter in a restaurant in Taiwan scooping and eating ice cream with a communal spoon has sparked controversy locally.

According to local media including Taiwan Zhonghua TV (CTS) on the 3rd, a restaurant in Taichung released CCTV footage from inside the restaurant taken on the 28th of last month, showing a man scooping ice cream with a spoon at the ice cream counter.

The video, filmed on the 22nd of last month, shows a man standing in front of the ice cream counter. The man uses a communal spoon to scoop some ice cream and tastes it. Then, he scoops and eats the ice cream again using the spoon.

The restaurant stated, "We had to discard all six tubs of ice cream at the self-service corner," and "We also had to apologize to other customers."

They also claimed to have suffered a loss exceeding 3,000 New Taiwan Dollars (approximately 128,000 Korean Won).

According to the CTS report, the man was one of a group of 25 Korean guests, and they also left the tables and floor in a mess.

The Korean team expressed a desire to make another reservation at the restaurant, but the restaurant declined.

However, some argue that from the released video alone, it is not possible to confirm whether the spoon actually touched the man's mouth or the cup. The Korean guests have denied wrongdoing, claiming the camera angle is problematic.
