First Mobile Phone Developer Martin Cooper
"Phone Implanted in Skin Would Not Need Charging"
Martin Cooper (94), who developed the world's first mobile phone in 1973, claimed that "one day mobile phones will be implanted in our skin."
On the 1st (local time), Cooper made this statement during an interview with the U.S. economic media CNBC at the mobile communication exhibition 'Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023' held in Barcelona, Spain, saying, "The next generation will have mobile phones implanted under their ears."
He explained, "Devices implanted in the skin do not need to be charged," adding, "Because our body is a perfect charger." He further elaborated, "When we consume food, our body produces energy, and only a very small amount of energy is needed to operate this device under the ear."
This seems to indicate a future technological stage of humanity augmented by microchips and sensors. Previously, some companies, including Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, have attempted to develop technology that combines computers with the human brain.
In particular, Neuralink, founded by Musk, is researching neural lace technology that implants ultra-small artificial intelligence (AI) devices into the human brain to connect the brain and computers.
Cooper pointed out, "Every time we use a mobile phone, if we don't have earphones, we have to hold this flat device and awkwardly raise our arm."
He also said, that when he was developing the mobile phone, he could not have imagined that many functions such as cameras would be included in mobile phones. Cooper mentioned, "Fifty years ago was a primitive era without the internet, large-scale integrated circuits, or digital cameras," adding, "The idea that one day mobile phones would become cameras and encyclopedias was not in our minds."
However, he said he did expect mobile phones to become commercialized. Cooper said, "We knew that connectivity was important, so we thought that one day everyone would have a mobile phone," and "And that almost happened."
Furthermore, he evaluated, "I have an unwavering belief in humanity and have seen all the progress we have made through technology. People today are wealthier and healthier than before," adding, "There will be ups and downs, but humanity is progressing."
