Gyeonggi Province will add 1,525 more restaurants designated with hygiene grades this year, expanding the total to 8,051 locations.
The restaurant hygiene grading system was introduced in 2017 for general restaurants, cafes, and bakeries to improve hygiene standards, prevent food poisoning, and guarantee consumers' right to choose restaurants.
Sixty-four items, including the hygiene conditions of seating areas, rooms, and kitchens, are evaluated, and if a score of 80 or above is achieved, a grade is assigned along with a certificate and a sign.
This year, the province will additionally designate 1,525 places, including ▲ one model area for operating the restaurant hygiene grading system ▲ cleaning cost support for 903 designated restaurants ▲ consulting for 350 designated restaurants under the hygiene grading system.
Kim Jang-hyun, Director of the Food Safety Division of the province, stated, "With the designation of the restaurant hygiene grading system, we plan to continuously expand restaurants where residents can dine cleanly and safely."
Meanwhile, to further expand the number of designated restaurants this year, the province will conduct preliminary group education and consulting targeting priority areas where restaurants gather, such as department stores, large marts, shopping malls, highway rest areas, and commercial districts.
