Geochang-gun Launches Countywide Countermeasure Committee for Hwanggang Intake Facility

March with Over 600 Participants from More Than 30 Organizations in Rally

Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 2nd that it launched the "Geochang-gun Hwanggang Intake Facility-related Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee" at the county office's main conference room, with about 200 participants including County Governor Gu In-mo and County Council Chairman Lee Hong-hee.


Governor Gu Chang-mo formed the countermeasure committee with about 100 members from 10 fields including provincial and county council members, education, economy, environment, agriculture, and health and welfare, to prepare countermeasures at the pan-citizen level regarding the promotion of the Hwanggang intake facility installation, which is part of the Nakdong River basin intake source diversification project. Shin Jae-hwa, a county council member, and Song Kang-hoon, president of the Geochang-gun Village Leaders Association, were appointed as co-chairmen.


After its launch, the pan-citizen countermeasure committee held a resolution rally at the rotary in front of the county office, issuing a resolution that urged "the immediate withdrawal of the Hwanggang intake facility installation project being promoted without the consent of Geochang residents," and performed a simultaneous placard-flipping performance to express opposition to the project.

Subsequently, committee members, village leaders, resident autonomy committee members, livestock-related personnel, about 30 organizations, and approximately 600 residents marched from the rotary in front of the county office to Daedong Rotary, shouting slogans such as "Immediately withdraw the Hwanggang intake facility plan that unilaterally forces the sacrifice of residents in a specific area," appealing for all residents to participate and fight resolutely.


Co-chairmen Shin Jae-hwa and Song Kang-hoon expressed a strong will to fight, stating, "It is obvious that the survival rights of Geochang residents, who are based on agriculture and livestock farming, will be seriously threatened," and "We will fight to the end to protect the survival rights of Geochang residents."


Governor Gu, who participated in the rally, said, "The countermeasure committee launched today will actively represent the voices of Geochang residents, and I hope that the residents will unite with one heart and mind to gather strength to withdraw the Hwanggang intake facility installation project."


The Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee related to the Geochang-gun Hwanggang Intake Facility plans to send the resolution to related institutions such as the Presidential Secretariat, the National Assembly, the Minister of Environment, the Director of the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, Korea Water Resources Corporation, and the Governor of Gyeongsangnam-do, and strongly assert the position of Geochang residents through consultations with Gyeongsangnam-do and related cities and counties.
