Residents living near the wastewater treatment plant of Dongwon F&B Co., Ltd.'s Suwon factory, who had been suffering from persistent foul odors, will finally be relieved from their discomfort.

On the 1st, Suwon City in Gyeonggi announced that the odor improvement construction at the Dongwon F&B wastewater treatment plant, which began in May 2021, will be completed by the end of this month. This project involves relocating the wastewater treatment facilities, previously located outdoors, underground and sealing them to block the odors.

In addition to the basic method of removing odors through chemical reactions using acids and alkalis and physical absorption, an ozone water method with strong oxidizing power has been introduced to break down the molecular structure of residual odor substances, preventing odors from escaping outside. The 6.7 billion KRW cost for the odor improvement construction was fully borne by Dongwon F&B Co., Ltd.

On the 28th of last month, Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-jun visited the site of the odor improvement construction at the wastewater treatment plant to hear the voices of residents suffering from the odors. He also inspected the construction site together with the residents.

The mayor said, "Residents have suffered greatly from the odors for a long time," and urged, "Please carry out the remaining construction meticulously so that residents no longer endure this pain."

He added, "We will form a consultative body consisting of residents, environmental groups, city council members, and public officials to continuously communicate with Dongwon F&B Co., Ltd. even after the facility is completed and work to improve any issues."

Meanwhile, complaints about odors from the Dongwon F&B wastewater treatment plant have reached 1,400 cases since 2016.
