Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, introduced the nation’s first-ever ‘Marine Debris Real-Name System’ on the 27th.

According to the county on the 28th, the Marine Debris Real-Name System is a policy where marine debris generated during fishing activities is disposed of at designated locations using exclusive bags printed with the name of the affiliated fishing village cooperative.

The county expects this system to prevent foul odors and landscape degradation caused by illegal dumping of marine debris, improve the efficiency of marine debris collection, and achieve resource recycling effects through separate disposal.

Additionally, with the cooperation of Beopseong Fishing Village Cooperative, 100 bags weighing 80 kg each per vessel will be distributed to all fishing boats affiliated with the cooperative. After a pilot operation of the system and verification of its effectiveness, it will be expanded to 16 fishing village cooperatives within the jurisdiction.

The county is drawing attention for leading various forms of system implementation, including the nationwide first pilot introduction of the ‘Marine Debris Real-Name System,’ marine debris cleanup projects, and recruitment of temporary workers as sea environment guardians, to further accelerate marine environment conservation and the creation of clean seas.

County Governor Kang Jong-man said, “We will spare no effort and support to establish the ‘Marine Debris Real-Name System’ through active communication, and for that, above all, a change in awareness and voluntary participation of fishermen are necessary.”
