The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization announced on the 28th that they have selected 21 Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) to drive regional tourism revitalization through proactive tourism content development by local residents and businesses.

This year, 15 DMOs were selected through a public contest, including 6 new organizations, 5 tourism hub city-type DMOs recommended by local governments (Busan, Gangneung, Mokpo, Andong, Jeonju), and 1 excellent DMO based on last year’s performance evaluation.

The Ministry and the Korea Tourism Organization will provide up to 250 million KRW in project funding to the selected DMOs to address regional tourism issues through public-private cooperation involving local residents and businesses.

In particular, this year, essential projects include regional travel subscription services to increase the influx of daily population and digital tourism resident ID card initiatives.

Lee Sang-tae, head of the Regional Tourism Development Team at the Korea Tourism Organization, stated, “As the number of areas experiencing population decline increases, the role of Destination Marketing Organizations entering their fourth year of operation is becoming increasingly important. We will do our best to ensure that the selected DMOs contribute to increasing the local daily population, respond to population extinction, and resolve regional tourism challenges.”
