Gumi-si, Unearthing Cultural Heritage... Implementing the 'Historical Figures' Works Translation Project'

Discovery and Translation of Local Historical Figures Records

Selection of 6 Collections of Historical Figures' Writings

Gumi City (Mayor Kim Jang-ho)'s first Class 1 public museum, the Gumi Seongrihak History Museum (hereinafter referred to as the History Museum), will implement the 'Gumi Historical Figures' Works Translation Project' from March to discover the record cultural heritage of local ancestors and translate it for easy access by the general public.

Supported by Gyeongbuk Province, this project aims for professional and efficient translation of classical materials. To this end, the History Museum signed a business consignment agreement with the Korean Studies Advancement Center, a specialized research institute in Korean studies, on the 23rd, and plans to commence full-scale translation work.

This year's translation target materials were selected from the collections held by the History Museum through internal experts and the Classical Translation Committee, focusing on six collections of works by figures born in Gumi or related to Gumi.

The collections of works by figures from Gumi include ▲ 'Jinrakdangjip (眞樂堂集)' by Kim Chwiseong (金就成: 1492?1550), a scholar of the early Joseon period ▲ 'Sangjeongilgo (橡亭逸稿)' by Hwang Pil (黃?: 1464?1526), a scholar of the early Joseon period and grandfather of Gosan Hwang Giro, known as the 'Grass Sage' ▲ 'Neokjeong Seonsaeng Ilgo (?亭先生逸稿)' by No Gyeongpil (盧景?: 1554?1595), a civil official of the early Joseon period who raised a militia and fought against Japanese forces during the Imjin War ▲ 'Bakjaejip (璞齋集)' by Kim Nyu (金紐: 1527?1580), a civil official of the early Joseon period ▲ and 'Yuheonjip (遊軒集)' by Jang Seokryong (張錫龍: 1823?1908), a descendant of Yeoheon Jang Hyeongwang and a civil official of the late Joseon period.

Additionally, the History Museum added 'Gujeong Seonsaeng Yugo (龜亭先生遺藁)' by Nam Jae (南在: 1351?1419), a founding contributor of Joseon who built a family shrine in Bamsil Village for Yaeun Giljae, which was collected last year.

An official from the city stated, “Among the 44 collections of works by historical figures from Gumi, only 12 have been translated, and even those were mainly carried out by family clans, making continuous achievements difficult to expect. Through this project, we will strive to discover Gumi's record cultural heritage and promote an annual translation project to widely publicize the lives and spirits of our local ancestors.”
