University students from around the world aspiring to become white (ethical) hackers will gather in Sejong this May.
Sejong City announced on the 28th that it will hold the "2023 Hacktheon Sejong International University Student Cybersecurity Competition and Conference" at the Government Sejong Convention Center from May 11 to 12.
Hacktheon Sejong is a compound word of Hacker, Pantheon, and Sejong, symbolizing the gathering of global cybersecurity talents in Sejong.
Last year's Hacktheon competition was held as a nationwide university student contest. However, starting this year, it has expanded into an international competition with participation from university and graduate students worldwide.
The main programs include ▲ cybersecurity competition ▲ information security academic conference featuring renowned domestic and international experts ▲ ICT (Information and Communication Technology) company exhibitions ▲ youth talent recruitment fair ▲ and workshops on quantum security, smart city cybersecurity, and other related fields.
The competition will hold online preliminaries on April 25, selecting the top 50 teams to advance to the finals, which will be held on May 11 at the Grand Ballroom of the Government Sejong Convention Center.
The preliminaries will be conducted in a Jeopardy-style format covering web hacking, pwnable, forensics, and cryptography fields, while the finals will combine Jeopardy-style problem-solving with real-time server attacks (EHRS, Ethical Hacking of Real-time Systems).
On May 12, the city will hold an awards ceremony, granting 30 million KRW to the grand prize team, 10 million KRW each to two excellence award teams, 3 million KRW each to three merit award teams, and 1 million KRW each to four special award teams.
Notably, the grand prize team will earn the right to participate in the finals of the "2023 Cyber Attack Defense Competition" hosted by the National Intelligence Service in July this year.
Applications for the competition can be submitted until April 22 on the "2023 Hacktheon Sejong International University Student Cybersecurity Competition and Conference" website.
Sejong Mayor Choi Min-ho stated, "Through this competition, the city aims to create an opportunity for Sejong to develop beyond a cybersecurity city into a sanctuary of cyber defense."
