Jungnang-gu Holds the 104th Anniversary March 1st Movement Patriotism Commemoration Ceremony
Held at Mangwoo History and Culture Park at 11 a.m. on March 1st
Reflecting on the significance of the March 1st Movement and continuing the spirit of patriotism
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi) announced that it will hold the '104th Anniversary March 1st Movement Patriotism Commemoration Ceremony' at 11 a.m. on March 1st at the Itaewon Cemetery Unmarked Graves Joint Burial Area (Yoo Gwan-soon Martyr’s Joint Grave) within Mangwoo History and Culture Park.
Co-hosted by the district and the Jungnang-gu branch of the Liberation Association (Chairman Yoo Yeon-seung), this event will be attended by about 50 residents to reflect on the history and significance of the March 1st Movement and to continue the spirit of patriotism.
The venue, Mangwoo History and Culture Park, is the resting place of many patriots including martyr Yoo Gwan-soon, Manhae Han Yong-un and Oh Se-chang, who were among the 33 national representatives who led the March 1st Movement, as well as independence activists Moon Il-pyeong and Bang Jeong-hwan. It is a historically significant place where the dedication of ancestors who sacrificed for the country can be remembered.
The ceremony will proceed in the order of the national anthem, speeches by Jungnang-gu Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi and Liberation Association Chairman Yoo Yeon-seung, reading of the Declaration of Independence by a resident representative, commemorative speeches, singing of the March 1st Movement song, flower offering, and three cheers of "Manse".
Jungnang-gu Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said, “It is meaningful to hold a patriotism commemoration ceremony to reflect on the spirit of the independence movement at Mangwoo History and Culture Park, where many patriots rest in peace,” adding, “I hope this ceremony will be an opportunity to inherit the unity, harmony, and noble patriotism of our ancestors and to inspire love for our country.”
Liberation Association Geumcheon-gu Branch Holds Unveiling Ceremony for March 1st Manse Movement Monument
‘Manse Movement Monument’ Installed at Siheung Elementary School to Commemorate Geumcheon-gu’s Manse Movement History
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon) announced that on the 28th at 11 a.m., the Liberation Association Geumcheon-gu Branch (Chairman Woo Yong-jun) installed a monument commemorating the Manse Movement at Seoul Siheung Elementary School and held an unveiling ceremony to mark the 104th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
This event was held to widely publicize and commemorate the spirit of resistance against Japanese rule when about 120 students at Siheung Public Elementary School, the predecessor of Siheung Elementary School, staged a joint school strike and shouted "Manse" during the nationwide March 1st Manse Movement in 1919.
Geumcheon-gu Mayor Yoo Seong-hoon said, “I am very proud to install a monument at Siheung Elementary School, the starting point of Geumcheon-gu’s Manse Movement, to commemorate the history of Geumcheon-gu’s resistance against Japanese colonial rule,” and added, “I would like to express my gratitude to the Liberation Association Geumcheon-gu Branch and the staff of Siheung Elementary School for their efforts in installing the monument and organizing the unveiling ceremony.”
Eunpyeong-gu Raises ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ Street Flags for the March 1st Movement
Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) raised the Treasure No. 2142 ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ discovered at the local temple Jingwansa on the morning of the 28th, ahead of the 104th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.
Until March 1st, 2,000 Jingwansa Taegukgi flags will be raised as street flags along nine major arterial roads including Tongil-ro, Eunpyeong-ro, Jeungsan-ro, Yeonseo-ro, and Seooreung-ro. Since 2015, the district has raised the Jingwansa Taegukgi along with the national flag on both the March 1st and Liberation Day anniversaries every year.
The ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ is the national flag used by Monk Baek Chowol during the independence movement and was designated as a treasure in 2021. It was discovered on May 26, 2009, during dismantling and repair work at the Chilseonggak Hall of Jingwansa Temple, found between the altar and pillars along with other independence movement materials.
Eunpyeong-gu Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, “I hope the citizens of Eunpyeong-gu will proudly feel the great spirit of Monk Baek Chowol’s Jingwansa Taegukgi, a proud symbol of independence.”
