The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) and the National Institute of Health announced on the 27th that they will hold an explanatory meeting for the 'Hospital-based Human Microbiome Research and Development Project' at Seoul Gangnam Severance Hospital on the 2nd of next month.
The hospital-based human microbiome research and development project is a national-level initiative jointly conducted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the KDCA over five years from 2023 to 2027, aimed at promoting related data standardization, diagnostic and therapeutic technology development specialized for intractable diseases.
The KDCA and the National Institute of Health will be responsible for establishing an integrated database for providing and feeding back microbiome genomic data and research results. The Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to focus on building a network of regional medical institutions nationwide and collecting and securing patient specimens and clinical information.
This explanatory meeting will be held to provide explanations about the hospital-based human microbiome research and development project, present operational guidelines, and gather expert opinions.
The KDCA explained, "In Korea, standardized guidelines and national-level information collection and sharing regarding specimen processing and analysis protocols, data and material quality control, which are fundamentally necessary for human microbiome research, are insufficient."
The KDCA expects that upon completion of this research and development project, high-quality standardized clinical information, specimens, and genomic information will be provided to stakeholders in the domestic healthcare sector, academia, research, and pharmaceutical and bio industries, thereby laying the foundation for the future development of diagnostics and therapeutics for intractable human diseases.
