500,000 Won Wedding Gift Mistakenly Deposited into Bride's Account
Fianc?'s Story: "In-Laws Refuse to Return It"
"Should Be More Careful" vs "Break Off Engagement Even Now"
Amid ongoing controversies surrounding congratulatory money, a story has emerged about a groom who is considering breaking off his engagement because the bride's parents refuse to return 500,000 won in congratulatory money mistakenly deposited into the bride's account by a friend of the groom's side.
On the 25th, a post titled "I want to break off my engagement over congratulatory money" was uploaded on the online community Nate Pann. The writer explained that before the wedding, they had agreed to give congratulatory money to each other's parents, and there were no complaints up to that point.
The writer said, "A friend living abroad sent 500,000 won as congratulatory money, apologizing for not being able to attend the wedding," adding, "The money was deposited into the bride's account instead of the groom's. It seems the friend mistakenly sent it to the wrong account after seeing the mobile wedding invitation."
He continued, "When I told the bride's side, they only mentioned that the congratulatory money had been received, but there was no word about returning it," adding that he is worried that all matters will be handled this way even after marriage and is considering breaking off the engagement.
He expressed his frustration, saying, "If I want to break off the engagement over this, am I being unreasonable?" and "My girlfriend says she will ask for it back, but shouldn't they just return it without having to ask?"

Netizens' opinions on this story are divided. One netizen commented, "Tell your friend to bow a hundred times," "Your friend saved your life with 500,000 won," "If your parents aren't returning it, your girlfriend should quickly give it back with her own money," and "If they act like this before marriage, it's obvious how it will be after marriage."
On the other hand, some netizens criticized the writer's attitude, saying, "Breaking off an engagement over 500,000 won is really petty," "First, ask for it back, and if they don't give it, then break up," "Talk to your girlfriend seriously and politely to return the money first," and "500,000 won is just an excuse; you just want to break off the engagement."
