Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) conducted a volunteer program for youth on winter break from January 14 to February 21.
This program expanded beyond the existing face-to-face volunteer activities focused on raising awareness of environmental issues and concern for neighbors to include non-face-to-face autonomous volunteer activities.
The volunteer activities consisted of four programs: ▲Environmental Education and Upcycling ▲Life Respect Education and Check-in Campaign ▲Non-face-to-face Autonomous Volunteer Activity for Book Review Writing ▲Non-face-to-face Autonomous Volunteer Activity for Neighborhood Environmental Cleanup.
Among these, the programs that received the most interest from youth were ‘Environmental Education and Upcycling’ and ‘Non-face-to-face Autonomous Volunteer Activity for Book Review Writing,’ which were evaluated as instilling a proper understanding of the environment and sustainable development.
‘Environmental Education and Upcycling’ involved environmental craft work where participants created cup holders (tea light candle holders) made from recycled paper along with proper awareness education. The participating students engaged in the activity with serious expressions throughout.
Student Im** (18), who participated in the activity, said, “Thinking that the cup holder I made will be delivered to neighbors, I put my passion into weaving the strings stitch by stitch. Through this opportunity, I want to practice recycling in daily life and participate more in upcycling activities that save resources.”
‘Non-face-to-face Autonomous Volunteer Activity for Book Review Writing’ involved reading books necessary for youth and writing book reviews. The reviews written by the youth will be exhibited both online and offline at public libraries in the region.
Student Kim** (16), who took part in this activity, said, “Writing book reviews was more difficult than I thought, but I felt great fulfillment in introducing these books, and I hope other friends can join this activity next time.”
Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, stated, “I extend encouragement and gratitude to the students who take an interest in their local community and neighbors and continue to take action on their own. I hope they grow into valuable members with a proper civic consciousness by engaging in public campaign activities through volunteer work.”
