Police Agency "Taking Time to Choose Successor... Emphasis on Internal Selection"
Attorney Jeong Soon-shin, newly appointed head of the National Investigation Headquarters overseeing police investigations, has tendered his resignation due to his child's school violence issue.
On the 25th, Attorney Jeong stated in a press release, "A situation has arisen where the public is worried because of my son's issue, and I have come to the conclusion that I cannot possibly fulfill the heavy responsibility of the head of the National Investigation Headquarters with such a flaw," adding, "I withdraw my application for the position of head of the National Investigation Headquarters."
He continued, "I apologize for my son's issue and once again ask for forgiveness from the victim and their parents on behalf of my entire family," and added, "My whole family will live with deep reflection from now on."
Previously, Attorney Jeong's son, after entering a prestigious private high school in 2017, bullied a classmate, A, for nearly a year. It is reported that the victim attempted extreme measures due to derogatory and dismissive remarks.
Ultimately, Attorney Jeong's son was transferred by the decision of the school violence committee. However, Attorney Jeong's side filed an administrative lawsuit to cancel the transfer decision, and lost in all court battles lasting about nine months, including the first trial, second trial, and the Supreme Court.
The National Police Agency is currently awaiting the judgment of the Ministry of Personnel Management following Attorney Jeong's sudden resignation one day before the start of his term as head of the National Investigation Headquarters.
Furthermore, regarding the appointment of a successor head, they have stated that they will take time to consider. While reapplication or internal selection is possible, since a public recruitment process was conducted during Attorney Jeong's appointment, it is reported that they are leaning toward internal selection.
