[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] The police have sent two individuals, including Choi Jeong-hee, the chairman of the reconstruction promotion committee, who are accused of insult and defamation, to the prosecution. However, it has been confirmed that a reinvestigation is underway following the prosecution's request for supplementary investigation.
On the 23rd, the Suseo Police Station in Seoul announced that although they recently sent two people, including Choi Jeong-hee, chairman of the reconstruction promotion committee, who were booked on charges of insult and defamation, to the prosecution, they are conducting a reinvestigation after receiving a request for supplementary investigation on the 30th of last month. The police judged that eight residents, including members of the Eunma Apartment Reconstruction Promotion Committee, were not guilty and did not send them to prosecution.
Ten officials related to Eunma were under police investigation for charges of insult against Yoon Young-jun, president of Hyundai Construction, and defamation against Chung Eui-sun, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group. Most of them were found not guilty. This case was triggered last year when the promotion committee opposed the underground passage of the metropolitan area express train (GTX) line through the complex, hanging banners on the apartment exterior walls and holding protests near Chairman Chung's residence.
As the promotion committee's protests intensified, Hyundai Construction applied to the court for a provisional injunction to prohibit the protests and the installation of banners. Along with the injunction application, Hyundai Construction filed criminal and civil complaints against the promotion committee and ten residents.
Previously, Hyundai Construction viewed the banners hung on the apartment exterior walls as damaging to Chairman Chung's reputation. It is also known that statements made by participants during the GTX opposition protests targeting President Yoon were judged as insults and led to the complaints.
