Additional University Admissions Also Show Regional Disparities... Hundreds to One in the Capital Area, First-Come-First-Served in Provinces

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] In the 2023 academic year university entrance additional recruitment, the competition rate difference between universities located in the metropolitan area and those in provincial areas was starkly divided.

According to Jongno Academy on the 22nd, an analysis of the competition rates for additional recruitment at major metropolitan universities after the final deadline showed that the Department of Psychology at Chung-Ang University had 468 applicants for 1 available spot, recording a competition rate of 468 to 1.

Following that, the Departments of Public Administration and Business Administration at Seoul National University of Science and Technology each had 307 applicants for 1 spot, and the Department of English Language and Literature at Chung-Ang University had 283 applicants for 1 spot.

In the natural sciences, the Department of Mathematics at Chung-Ang University had 248 applicants for 1 spot, recording a competition rate of 248 to 1; the Department of Optometry at Seoul National University of Science and Technology had 221 applicants for 1 spot; and the Department of Software at Chung-Ang University had 195 applicants for 1 spot.

As a result of the final closing of additional recruitment, the competition rates by school were Chung-Ang University at 193.8 to 1, Dongguk University at 108.7 to 1, Seoul National University of Science and Technology at 87.3 to 1, and Ajou University at 136.1 to 1.

On the other hand, some universities located in provincial areas conducted same-day application and same-day acceptance announcements, effectively operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Since the number of available spots and applicants changed daily, it was difficult to calculate competition rates.

Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, explained, "Many universities in provincial areas divide additional recruitment into 1st to 3rd rounds and even conduct additional recruitment after additional recruitment. Although some provincial national universities record competition rates of 3 to 1 in additional recruitment, since there is no limit on the number of applications, a competition rate of 3 to 1 practically means it is difficult to fill the available spots."

Meanwhile, university additional recruitment will continue until the 28th.
