[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] A broker who facilitated Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) jeonse lease by obtaining false tenant qualifications has been brought to trial.
On the 22nd, the Criminal Division 2 of the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Young-hwa) announced that on the 17th, Mr. A was arrested and indicted on charges of fraud and violation of the Special Act on Public Housing.
Mr. A is accused of deceiving LH regarding the eligibility requirements for public rental housing jeonse lease tenants from March 2017 to May last year, and facilitating 31 applicants to receive about 2.8 billion won in jeonse deposits. The public rental housing tenancy Mr. A facilitated is a system where, if a low-income person in the city searches for a residence within their current living area, LH signs the jeonse contract on their behalf and subleases it to them.
After recruiting applicants, Mr. A received between 1 million and 3 million won per case as a work fee, made false move-in reports to goshiwon (small lodging houses), or fabricated false employment documents proving retirement or financial hardship. He deceived LH and local government officials into believing the applicants were from vulnerable housing groups or emergency housing support targets, thereby obtaining jeonse lease tenant qualifications.
A prosecution official stated, "The money Mr. A received as work fees will be confiscated as criminal proceeds," and added, "We will strictly respond to crimes that deprive many good-faith vulnerable housing groups of rental housing supply opportunities and cause losses to the national treasury, and thoroughly confiscate criminal proceeds."
