[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 22nd that it will distribute 83,000 laptops to new middle and high school students as well as 6th-grade elementary students for the new semester.
The Office of Education plans to support laptops for all students from 4th grade elementary to 3rd grade high school by 2025, following last year’s distribution to 1st-year middle school students and this year’s distribution to 6th-grade elementary, 1st-year middle, and 1st-year high school students, so that students can freely engage in digital education both at school and at home.
Last year, 27,000 laptops were provided to 1st-year middle school students, and including this year’s 83,000 units, an additional 213,000 laptops will be distributed over the next three years until 2025.
This year, lightweight high-spec laptops weighing about 1.1 kg, approximately 50% lighter than last year’s models, will be provided.
The Office of Education has installed charging storage cabinets in classrooms and set up a call center and unmanned storage lockers to make it easy for students to get their laptops repaired.
Additionally, to prevent negative effects such as digital addiction, harmful information blocking software will be installed on the laptops, and support will be provided for diagnosing students’ internet usage habits as well as education and counseling.
An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "This year, we plan to provide laptops that are lighter and have better performance than last year," adding, "We will collaborate with related departments to maximize the enhancement of students’ digital capabilities."
