[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Taewon] Ewha Womans University announced on the 21st that it held the event "Continuing Ewha Women's Studies" on the 18th at the on-campus complex to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Women's Studies.
The event was held in three parts: Part 1 was an online academic conference, Part 2 included a keynote lecture and roundtable, and Part 3 was an alumni event, with over 130 participants including current and former professors of the Department of Women's Studies, graduates, and current students.
Kim Eunmi, President of Ewha Womans University, said in her congratulatory speech, "Ewha has played a central role in laying the academic foundation of women's studies not only in Korean society but also in Asia, and in elevating Korean women's studies to a global status," adding, "Without Ewha Women's Studies, many discourses and practices for the advancement of women's rights today would have been impossible."
Ewha Womans University began offering the first undergraduate liberal arts course in "Women's Studies" in Korea in 1977, and in 1982 established the first master's program in Women's Studies in Asia. To date, it has produced 350 master's and 47 doctoral graduates, promoting the development of women's studies as an academic field and the advancement of women's rights.
