Formation and Operation of a Dedicated Road Checking Team

Creating a Sophisticated and Elegant City Image, Fostering a Welcoming Atmosphere

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Busan City is forming a ‘Road Checking Task Force (TF)’ led by the Deputy Mayor to create a sophisticated and dignified city image and foster a welcoming atmosphere in preparation for the onsite inspection by the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) in Busan (April 2?7). The task force will promote urban environment maintenance.

This ‘Road Checking Task Force (TF)’ was established to take preemptive measures against all factors that could undermine the city’s dignity in preparation for the BIE onsite inspection aimed at the successful hosting of the 2030 Busan World Expo.

The TF leader is the Deputy Mayor, with the General Coordination Team composed of the Pedestrian City Policy Division, and the Working Team consisting of related departments and district offices. The General Coordination Team will comprehensively cover urban environment areas to specify detailed and comprehensive inspection targets. The TF leader, General Coordination Team, Working Team, and deputy heads of the relevant districts will conduct meticulous road checks and maintenance along the inspection team’s movement routes.

Since February 15, the city has been conducting urban environment maintenance in four stages?pre-inspection, road checking, maintenance supplementation, and final joint inspection?until the inspection team’s departure on April 7.

First, the city will ▲maintain and remove old or damaged public signs and illegal advertisements that spoil the city’s aesthetics, ▲continuously crack down on habitual illegal parking zones using mobile patrols and unmanned enforcement systems, and ▲improve urban cleanliness by intensively performing vacuum suction water cleaning along the main routes and visit sites of the inspection team.

Additionally, to promote a vibrant city image and welcoming atmosphere, the city plans to ▲plant flowers, install welcome flower towers, create flower beds on traffic islands, and prune and maintain trees along streets, intersections, and medians, including removing dead trees.

Furthermore, ▲districts will intensively coordinate and operate ‘Urban Environment Maintenance Days,’ and Busan City will strengthen environmental patrols through ‘Clean Busan Mobile 365’ and actively incorporate feedback from maintenance reports submitted by the ‘Busan Road Citizen Monitoring Group,’ composed of general citizens. This is also expected to expand promotion of the 2030 Expo through citizen participation.

Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “A pleasant urban environment is the first step to enhancing city competitiveness and the image of Busan. At a time when nationwide efforts are focused on securing the 2030 Busan World Expo, we will make every effort to ensure flawless urban environment maintenance so that the heartfelt wishes of all citizens hoping for the 2030 World Expo in Busan are fully conveyed to the BIE inspection team.”
