Seoul Municipal Cemetery Supports Half the Cost for Exhumation and Cremation of Graves

Seoul Facilities Corporation Significantly Expands Support Scale for Leap Month

[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] The Seoul Facilities Corporation announced on the 21st that it will open the graves at Yongmi 1·2, Byeokje, and Naegok-ri, and provide opening and cremation support funds to bereaved families who have completed cremation.

Considering that it usually costs 800,000 to 1,000,000 KRW for grave opening and cremation, the financial burden is effectively reduced by half.

The corporation will provide 400,000 KRW per grave on a first-come, first-served basis from tomorrow's visit registration until the 300 million KRW budget is exhausted. Last year, with a budget of 200 million KRW, a total of 500 graves were supported, but this year, considering the leap month (March 22 to April 19), an additional 100 million KRW has been allocated to provide support funds for a total of 750 graves.

The grave user must complete a cremation reservation in advance, then visit the relevant cemetery management office in person to submit the grave opening report, support fund application, and required documents.

If the cremation certificate is mailed to the relevant cemetery management office within 10 days after cremation, the support fund will be paid. More detailed information can be found on the Seoul City Funeral Facilities website or by phone inquiry.

Seoul Facilities Corporation Director Kang Young said, “As we enter a low birthrate and aging society, the corporation is striving to improve the traditional funeral culture that is not environmentally friendly and to promote eco-friendly funerals. This expansion of support is part of that effort.” He added, “Going forward, Seoul Facilities Corporation will continue to work to spread eco-friendly funeral culture based on enhancing citizen convenience.”
