UN Security Council Meeting Convened to Discuss Response to North Korea ICBM Launch

[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) announced on the 20th (local time) that it will hold an open meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York in the afternoon to discuss responses to North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) 'Hwasong-15' test launch.

Member states including the United States and Japan maintain that North Korea's ICBM launch violates UN resolutions and that sanctions against North Korea should be automatically strengthened in accordance with UNSC Resolution 2397 on North Korea sanctions adopted in 2017. However, since China and Russia oppose additional sanctions on North Korea, it is expected that no official response at the Security Council level will be made.

Hwang Jun-guk, South Korea's Ambassador to the UN, is scheduled to attend the Security Council meeting as a concerned party and emphasize the necessity of sanctions against North Korea.
