Genesis Invitational Showcases Endurance by Completing 72 Holes
The "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA) had a smooth comeback.
On the 19th (local time), Woods finished the final 4th round of the PGA Tour "special match" Genesis Invitational (total prize money $20 million) held at Riviera Country Club (par 71, 7,322 yards) near Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, California, with 3 birdies and 5 bogeys. It was his first field comeback in 7 months since the major Open in July last year, finishing tied for 45th place (1-under-par 283).
After severely injuring his leg in a traffic accident in February 2021, Woods devoted himself to treatment and rehabilitation. Last year, he participated only three times in major tournaments: the Masters in April, the PGA Championship in May, and the Open. This is Woods' first time advancing to the main field in an official tournament in 9 months since the PGA Championship. Although Woods made the cut tied for 53rd at the PGA Championship, he withdrew in the 3rd round due to poor physical condition. Therefore, this is the first time in 10 months that Woods has completed all 4 rounds of a tournament since the Masters (47th place).
In this tournament, Woods recorded 1 eagle, 13 birdies, 44 pars, and 14 bogeys. He showed resilience by shooting scores in the 60s in the 1st round (69) and 3rd round (67). Most notably, it is encouraging that he completed all 72 holes despite his uncomfortable leg. Woods hit a maximum drive of 364 yards (10th place), showing he was not behind younger players in distance competition. His average driving distance was 306.2 yards (tied 24th), and his average number of putts was 27.25 (tied 29th).
American golf media Golfweek stated, "Through this tournament, we confirmed that Woods' ball speed, distance, and accuracy are sufficient to endure 72 holes of play," and added, "Woods still has the will to compete for victory, and his performance showed potential. The variable will be whether he can maintain this throughout the season."
After the match, Woods said, "It was somewhat more difficult than expected, but it is a process moving in the right direction," and added, "With the help of our team, my physical condition is gradually recovering, and I was able to participate in every round." Regarding his plans for the next tournament, he answered cautiously. He said, "I have to see how my body feels," and added, "As I said last year, I will participate in about two more tournaments besides the majors this year."
