Yongin City, along with Suwon and Goyang in Gyeonggi Province and Changwon in Gyeongnam Province, has received the good news of being promoted to a special city (Teukrye-si). This designation was granted as the amendment to the Local Autonomy Act, which assigns the title of ‘special city’ to metropolitan cities with populations exceeding one million, passed the National Assembly plenary session. It can be considered an intermediate form between metropolitan local governments and basic local governments.
According to related industries, once designated as a special city, Yongin can autonomously establish customized urban development strategies and proceed with urban development at its own discretion. Additionally, the expansion of urban infrastructure such as roads and culture can be carried out without going through Gyeonggi Province, enabling faster administrative services.
In particular, for Yongin City, the ability to autonomously develop the city means that projects like the ‘Gyeonggi Yongin Platform City’ and the ‘Yongin Semiconductor Cluster’ can accelerate their progress. Experts also foresee advantages in attracting large-scale national projects.
In line with the accelerated urban development of Yongin Special City, a residential complex expected to benefit is currently under construction. The protagonist is ‘Dongcheon Station Xi Lerne,’ located in the Dongcheon-dong area of Suji-gu, Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province.
