Clash Over 'Network Usage Fees'

One of the main agenda items at this year's MWC is network usage fees. Not only in Korea but also in the European Union (EU), legislation on network usage fees is underway, and Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, who is leading this effort, will also appear as a speaker at MWC. The first keynote speech on the opening day is titled "Vision of an Open Future." Mats Granryd, GSMA Secretary-General; Jos? Mar?a ?lvarez-Pallete, CEO of Spanish telecom company Telef?nica; and Christel Heydemann, CEO of French telecom company Orange, will discuss visions to achieve a fair and equitable future.

Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT, will participate as a speaker in the session "Network Investment: Delivering The Digital Revolution" held on the 28th. This session will include executives responsible for policy from telecom companies such as Deutsche Telekom, Saudi Telecom, GSMA, as well as big tech companies like Meta and Netflix. Since Korea was the first in the world to initiate litigation over network usage fees between telecom companies and big tech, the global telecommunications industry is expected to focus attention on this. Members of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting, and Communications Committee will also attend MWC.

Meanwhile, Hwang Hyun-sik, CEO of LG Uplus, has decided not to attend this MWC. This is to focus on responding to and finding solutions for recent personal information and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Instead, key business division executives will attend to discuss cooperation with overseas operators.
