Yongsan-gu Hyochang Park Front Station 3·1 Movement Day Commemorative Taegeukgi Street Creation

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu will create a ‘Taegeukgi Street’ from February 25 to March 5 along the section from Hyochang Park Front Station to Hyochang Park on Subway Line 6 to commemorate the 104th anniversary of the March 1st Movement.

The March 1st Movement Day is a national holiday established to commemorate the March 1st Movement. On March 1, 1919, 104 years ago, our ancestors protested against Japanese colonial rule and announced the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming Korea’s will for independence to the world.

The district decided to create Taegeukgi Street to reflect on the historical value and meaning of the independence movement in everyday life.

The district plans to display Taegeukgi flags in a row using 25 street lamps along the section from Hyochang Park Front Station to Hyochang Park. Taegeukgi flags will also be hung on 20 trees in front of the main gate of Hyochang Park to create the Taegeukgi Street.

Various side events have also been prepared. First, on the 21st from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a Taegeukgi eco bag and mirror making experience event will be held in the lobby in front of the exhibition hall on the basement first floor of Yongsan Art Hall.

A photo exhibition featuring the history of the Taegeukgi and scenes of Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) blooming will also be held. From the 21st to the 23rd, it will be exhibited in front of the exhibition hall at Yongsan Art Hall; from the 24th to the 26th, on the basement fourth floor of Noksapyeong Station on Subway Line 6; and from the 27th to March 2, on the first floor of Itaewon Veterans Hall.

Kim Seonsu, Acting Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “We are creating Taegeukgi Street at Hyochang Park to reexamine the historical value of the March 1st Movement,” adding, “We hope that every household will also display the Taegeukgi and carry on the spirit of our ancestors.”

Meanwhile, Hyochang Park is a sacred site of the independence movement, as it is the resting place of seven patriots including Baekbeom Kim Gu, the three martyrs (Lee Bong-chang, Yun Bong-gil, Baek Jeong-gi), and key figures of the Provisional Government (Lee Dong-nyeong, Jo Seong-hwan, Cha Ri-seok), as well as the symbolic grave of An Jung-geun.
