Busan Gijang-gun, Strong Opposition to the Installation of Industrial Waste Landfill in Jangan-eup

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan's Gijang-gun has expressed its opposition to the installation of an industrial waste landfill to Busan City.

On the 17th, Jeong Jong-bok, the head of Gijang-gun, and Park Woo-sik, chairman of the county council, met with Lee Seong-gwon, Busan City's Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs, to directly deliver a statement opposing the installation of the industrial waste landfill in Myeongrye-ri, Jangan-eup.

Since a large-scale industrial waste landfill project plan was submitted to Busan City in 2021, Gijang-gun has continuously conveyed its opposition to the landfill installation and protested to Busan City.

During the meeting, Jeong Jong-bok said, "The planned project site is currently being developed by Gijang-gun as a park golf course, and an adjacent site will have a Healing Forest completed in June this year," adding, "We ask Busan City to reconsider so that the opinions of local residents can be prioritized regarding the industrial waste landfill installation project."

In the statement, Jeong criticized, "Busan City is forcing sacrifices by demanding the acceptance of waste landfills in wide areas like Gijang-gun without any vision, direction, or consideration of alternatives for waste management."

He continued, "To prevent the situation from worsening due to a 'waste crisis' caused by landfill saturation, fundamental measures to reduce the volume of industrial waste generation must be established," urging, "Please create a sustainable, premium eco-friendly city of Busan with no waste concerns through waste minimization and maximizing recycling."

A Gijang-gun official stated, "We will continue to express opposition to Busan City until the industrial waste landfill installation project in Myeongrye-ri, Jangan-eup is resolved smoothly, and we will do our best to prevent any harm to the residents."

The site is located on the border between Busan and Ulsan and is close to the residential area of Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun, Ulsan City, so Ulsan City is also opposing the landfill installation.
