[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 16th (local time), another strong aftershock occurred in Turkiye, where more than 40,000 people died due to the earthquake.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), at 9:47 PM local time on the same day, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 occurred 19 km northwest offshore of Uzunba, Hatay Province, Turkiye. The epicenter of the earthquake was analyzed to be at 36.20 degrees north latitude and 35.82 degrees east longitude, with a focal depth of 10 km.
Russia's Sputnik News, citing Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), analyzed the magnitude of this earthquake as 5.1. The Syrian Geological Analysis Center measured the magnitude as 5.4. Sputnik reported that buildings damaged by the major earthquake on the 6th collapsed further due to the impact of this aftershock.
Germany's DPA news agency reported, based on eyewitness accounts, that residents of Idlib Province in northwestern Syria screamed and ran out into the streets when the aftershock occurred.
Earlier, on the 6th, strong earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5 struck southern Turkiye and northern Syria. UNICEF stated that due to the collapse of old buildings caused by this earthquake, 41,000 people have died so far in both Syria and Turkiye, and the number of displaced persons has reached 8.2 million.
