[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyungpil] The ‘62nd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival,’ a sports festival for the unity of 2 million Jeollanam-do residents, will be held in Wando-gun for four days from May 12 to 15.

According to the county on the 16th, the organizing committee of the 62nd Jeollanam-do Sports Festival is introducing the rules and viewing points of each event every week so that spectators can enjoy the games more interestingly.

The event introduced this time is ‘tennis.’ Tennis is a sport where two teams compete by hitting a ball back and forth over a net with rackets. There are singles matches with two players, doubles matches with four players in two pairs, and mixed doubles composed of one male and one female player per team.

In international or official matches, men play best of five sets, while women and juniors play best of three sets. Tennis matches consist of four stages: points, games, sets, and matches.

During the match, when an attack succeeds or fails, a player gains or loses one point, which is called a point.

The first to reach four points wins one game. If the score reaches 3-3 points, it is called deuce, and the player who first gains two consecutive points wins the game. The first to win six games wins one set.

The way tennis scores are called differs from other sports; it simply assigns names to point scores. The terms are love for zero points, fifteen for one point, thirty for two points, and forty for three points.

The tennis competition of the 62nd Jeonnam Sports Festival will be held at the Wando Tennis Court from May 13 to 15 for three days, with about 150 players from 22 cities and counties participating in a tournament format (four rounds, single elimination).

The matches proceed in the order of the first and second singles, third doubles, and fourth and fifth singles. The team that wins three matches wins the competition.

Participants can include up to seven players besides the director, manager, and coach, including one substitute player.

Eligibility requires registration as a sports festival player within the designated period. Only those from Jeollanam-do can participate; players from other cities or provinces’ professional, workplace, military, or school teams are not allowed. Officials can participate based on their registered domicile or birthplace.

In the 61st tournament in 2022, the rankings were 1st place Yeonggwang, 2nd place Wando, and 3rd place Gangjin and Jangheung. In the 58th tournament in 2019, 1st place Yeonggwang, 2nd place Damyang, and 3rd place Yeosu and Mokpo. In the 57th tournament in 2018, 1st place Yeonggwang, 2nd place Wando, and 3rd place Damyang and Yeongam.

The key point of the 62nd tournament is whether the traditional powerhouse Yeonggwang-gun will win the championship for the fourth consecutive time, or whether Wando-gun, which placed second in the 61st and 57th tournaments, will break Yeonggwang-gun’s streak and claim the championship.

The host, Wando-gun, ranked fifth in the 2019 tournament but rose again to second place in the 2022 tournament, emerging as a new powerhouse to challenge Yeonggwang-gun. It is expected to achieve good results by leveraging the advantage of being the host in the 62nd tournament.

Meanwhile, the county is making every effort to prepare the festival by organizing various side events and performances to blend sports with cultural arts, creating a festival that both athletes and spectators can enjoy.
