Overseas Patent Applications Surpass Domestic Share
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Gyumin] Hyundai Mobis filed about 3,000 patents domestically and internationally last year, with overseas intellectual property filings surpassing domestic filings for the first time. Notably, about 70% of the total patent filings came from advanced fields such as autonomous driving, electrification, UAM, and robotics.
They announced this during the '2023 Patent Awards' held at the Mabuk Research Center in Gyeonggi-do, attended by CEO Jo Seonghwan and others. The event rewards researchers who filed outstanding patents last year and encourages creative research activities. A total prize money of 100 million KRW was awarded to 35 researchers and their respective departments based on patent performance.
Outstanding technologies selected include future purpose-built vehicle (PBV) mobility-related technologies, a new concept autonomous driving camera that assists safe driving even in severe weather, and next-generation side airbags that can deploy in real-time during side collisions.

Hyundai Mobis is strengthening its patent competitiveness through the development of global standard patents. Standard patents are foundational technologies certified by international standard organizations, and third parties must pay royalties to the company holding the standard patent to use the technology in their products. Standard patents alone can generate another form of revenue.
Their strategy for securing standard patents involves predicting technologies to be established as international standards in the future and strategically filing patents, as well as re-filing existing patents as standard patents in accordance with the formats of international standard organizations. Key targets include autonomous driving, electric vehicle charging, V2X communication technology, and high-precision positioning tracking systems.
Additionally, Hyundai Mobis is pursuing a strategy of purchasing excellent patents held by domestic and international universities, companies, and research institutions. Patent experts and patent attorneys support researchers step-by-step from task selection to reliability verification. They also provide researchers with various information to consider international standards before filing new patents.
