On the 15th, the city announced that the national shooting team candidates are sweating it out in winter training camps focused on physical strength, skills, and mental toughness at the Pohang Indoor Shooting Range.

This training camp is organized by the Korea Shooting Federation and the Pohang Shooting Federation and runs for a total of 18 days from February 9 to 26.

The participating team consists of 49 members, including former coach Gapsoon Yeo, who won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, four professional coaches, and athletes selected based on their 2022 qualifying records, ranging from high school sophomores to university seniors, including air rifle and air pistol shooters.

Among them, athletes with outstanding records will have the opportunity to participate in the Junior World Cup in Germany held in June 2023, as well as the chance to be selected for the 2023 Changwon World Junior Championships, the first Junior Global Championship to be held in Korea in July.

On the 10th, with support from the Pohang Northern Fire Station, emergency first aid and CPR practical training necessary for sports sites were conducted. The candidate athletes are receiving systematic and intensive guidance while having their individual shooting skills checked by professional coaches.

Since starting the youth national team training camp in 2019, Pohang City has been actively supporting athletes by providing vehicle support and a comfortable training environment to ensure that national team candidates can focus on training without difficulties, hosting the training camps annually since 2020.

Hwang Sang-sik, Director of the Sports Industry Division, said, “Since this training involves national shooting team candidates, we are making thorough preparations to ensure that athletes can train safely and efficiently while staying in Pohang.” He added, “We will continue to leverage Pohang’s warm climate as an advantage to attract various training camps and contribute to revitalizing the local economy.”
